OUR PLASTIC SURGEON

Dr Wong Chin Ho graduated from the National University of Singapore on the Dean’s List of his graduating class in 2000. He completed his Basic Surgical Training in General Surgery in 2004 and went on to complete his Advance Surgical Training in Plastic Surgery at the Department of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital in 2008. He was inducted as a Fellow of the Academy of Medicine of Singapore upon completion of his plastic surgery training.

To gain a deeper understanding of advanced techniques in his subspecialty of aesthetic plastic surgery, Dr Wong went on to do a total of 3 post-graduate surgical fellowships over the next 2 years in Asia, Australia and the USA. The first fellowship was in 2007 when Dr Wong was awarded the Health Manpower Development Programme (HMDP) Award by the Ministry of Health to spend 1 year doing Reconstructive Microsurgery under Professor Fu-Chan Wei at the Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. This was followed by a 6 month Advanced Facial Aesthetic Fellowship with Dr Bryan Mendelson in Melbourne Australia. Dr Mendelson is considered an authority in facial anatomy as well as one of the most sought after surgeon for facelifts in the world. In 2010 he was the recipient of the first International Fellowship awarded by the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). This scholarship gave him the opportunity to spend time with and learn from top American plastic surgeons throughout the USA. Wanting to refine and take his understanding of advanced surgical techniques to the next level, Dr Wong travelled throughout the USA to learn from the best plastic surgeons in the USA. For rhinoplasty he visited Dr Rollin Daniel, Dr Rod Rohrich, Dr Jack Gunter, Dr Spencer Cochrane and Dr Steve Byrd. For facelift he spent time with Dr Fritz Barton, Dr Daniel Baker and Dr James Stuzin and for eyelid surgery he visited Dr Glenn Jelks, Dr Clinton McCord and Dr Mark Codner.

Dr Wong is very passionate about research, focusing on the facial anatomy and eyelid surgery. This research is valuable because the understanding gained from these investigations would have immediate application in how we can use these new anatomical understanding to improve and even design new procedures that are safer, more predictable with better results. An example of this is the description of the tear trough ligament in the mid cheek by Dr Wong. This ligament is a key retaining ligament of the mid cheek and is the anatomical cause of the tear trough deformity. Its description allow for better understanding as well as being better able to correct the tear trough deformity by surgical as well as non-surgical means. More recently, Dr. Wong described a novel approach to upper eyelid ptosis correction using a formula that can accurately determine the amount of tightening required depending on the individual need of the patients. This has enabled this procedure to be done more accurately and predictably. These clinical works have also won numerous national and international academic recognitions for its contributions to plastic surgery.

He maintains close ties with the Department of Plastic Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery at the Singapore General Hospital where he remained as a Visiting Consultant to the Department with a leadership role in teaching residents and trainee plastic surgeons in his subspecialty of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. He is also a founding faculty member of the prestigious Melbourne Facial Anatomy Course (MAFAC), an advanced anatomy course that teaches plastic surgeons the surgical anatomy of the face and its surgical applications in deep plane facelifts.

Philosophy and Approach to Aesthetic Surgery

I’ve always believed that plastic surgery is a unique specialty that embraces in equal measure both science and art. The evidence-based science of aesthetic plastic surgery is precise and exact. The artistry of aesthetic plastic surgery is more difficult to grasp and is the culmination of the surgeon’s experience, training, personal preference, instincts and aesthetic judgment.

An appreciation of the aesthetics that best suit the individual patient is something cultivated over years in practice, and this is precisely the kind of insights that can only be offered by an experienced plastic surgeon. With this in mind, every approach I adopt and develop is focused on delivering completely natural results with minimal hint of surgery – one that will be in harmony with the rest of your facial features. This is the essence of quality plastic surgery.

In order to do this, the best available techniques have been used and perfected over the years. In areas where traditional techniques are lacking, these procedures are modified, improved or even redesigned, to deliver a level of outcomes that today’s patients have come to expect of quality plastic surgery. But most importantly, safety and predictability is my main priority, and only procedures that have proven to be reliable are used in my practice.

Patients will find that there are many different approaches available to achieve a desired outcome, for example the many operations described to correct eye bags. This wide repertoire allows me to tailor specific procedures for different patients. While each operation is designed for specific aims, it also comes with its own advantages as well as limitations and risks.

To me, each individual is unique with his or her own specific needs. Accordingly, an approach designed for your specific needs will be formulated during the consultation that would best meet your requirements within the permitted time frame.

Aesthetic surgery is not merely about looking different or even younger, but more often than not it is about helping patients feel less despondent about the aging process. I feel privileged to be able to go on this journey with my patients, and give them a renewed sense of confidence and vitality for the future.

As their surgeon, I do not believe in compromises or short cuts. Quality plastic surgery is not a ‘quick fix’ with no down time. With meticulous techniques and care, the down time can be minimised. As such, our staff are trained to care for the patient every step of the way, from the initial consultation to well beyond the day of the surgery.

Finally, the science of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery is continuously evolving and improving. I am committed to constantly improving my skills and services through research and education, in order to deliver the services that my patients expect and deserve.

MAFAC (Melbourne Advanced Facial Anatomy Course)

Dr Wong is one of the founding faculty members of the prestigious Melbourne Advanced Facial Anatomy Course (MAFAC). MAFAC has been developed specifically for practicing Plastic Surgeons or Plastic Surgery Trainees in their final year, to advance their understanding of facial anatomy to the level where they can comfortably and safely incorporate the benefits of recent advances into their clinical practice.

The Melbourne Advanced Facial Anatomy Course is based around a tightly structured, two day dissection program focused on maximising surgeons ‘learning through hands on experience’. Participants readily understand the facial layers, the important facial nerve relationships and their applications, using the surgical quality cadavers at the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons with direction from the experienced Faculty.

Incorporating the latest understand of the 3-dimensional anatomy of the facial layers and key retaining ligaments, this course is designed to teach surgeons to safely and predictably perform the deep plane facelift
